During the discussion, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Adviser Nahid Islam elaborated on the naming and organisation of the Anti Discrimination Student Movement.
He highlighted the movement's efforts to create an inclusive society keeping Bangladesh in centre.
Youth and Sports Ministry Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan praised the print media for its role during the difficult days of July, stating that "the print media was a reliable source of information" when television channels were unable to provide news.
1. Md Mahfuz Alam, the coordinator of the Liaison Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, characterized the recent popular uprising as a well-organized initiative. He remarked that the political agreement reached in 1990 was disrupted during the events of January 11, leading to a significant erosion of the people's aspirations since that time. He elaborated that the struggle against fascist regimes has emerged from various societal levels, and the current discourse revolves around the integration of all citizens into a reimagined Bangladesh.
He underscored the necessity of comprehending the origins of fascism within Bengali nationalism and guiding the nation through a transformative civilizational process. He highlighted the critical need to dismantle the prevailing fascist structures and to establish a new societal order.
Mahfuz Anam, President of the Editors' Council, stressed the immediate requirement for a transparent and effective government. He also pointed out the importance of articulating a clear vision for a new nation and fostering a connection between the government and its citizens. The media is positioned to serve as a conduit in this context. In his assurance to the leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the editor of The Daily Star affirmed the media's commitment to participating in the reform and nation-building efforts.
He advocated for the annulment of all fabricated and harassment-related charges, emphasizing the vital role of press freedom.
The Editors' Council expressed its intention to collaborate in the nation's transformative journey. The meeting included participants such as Nasir Uddin Patowary (Nasir Abdullah), Akram Hossain, Bhuiyan Asadu-zzaman, Mamun Abdu-llahil, and Ariful Islam Aadi from the Liaison Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, along with Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah from the coordinators, and Samantha Sharmin representing the civic committee. The discussion was facilitated by Dewan Hanif Mahmood, the general secretary of the Editors' Council and editor of Bonik Barta.
